【Sapporo · Kotoni】Spot the Cow Sign! Seafood Izakaya ‘Gottagaeshi’ Kotoni

🗾 Introduction

Kotoni in Sapporo’s Nishi Ward clusters restaurants around Kotoni Station on the Tozai Subway Line—easy for locals and visitors alike. The author visited on March 21, 2026. On the 2nd floor of Hosokawa Building, Gottagaeshi Kotoni is a seafood izakaya whose landmark is a big cow sculpture and sign bursting from a brick wall. Families are the main crowd, and the place feels lively and welcoming. Behind the playful exterior you’ll find oysters, sashimi, grilled fish, and more—and toasting with Sapporo Classic, Hokkaido’s exclusive draft, is the natural move. This visit, the author sat at the counter alone—Classic in hand, then sake because seafood and nihonshu are a dangerous combo—and had a quiet, very happy solo night (the tab crept up; more on that below).

  • Budget (typical): With food and beer, about ¥5,000 per person is a fair ballpark (orders vary).
  • Author’s bill (oops): After adding sake on top of that, the total topped ¥6,000—blame the perfect pairing of seafood and nihonshu, or blame self-control (the author is still “researching” which). If you drink in moderation, ~¥5,000 is a comfortable target.

🍤 Highlights & Experience

Start with a mug of Sapporo Classic and the otoshi (appetizer set)—the mug in the photo is Classic too.

Raw oysters come with lemon—fresh and plump in the shell. If raw isn’t your thing, steamed oysters are also available.

Kani-miso (crab innards paste) with cucumber and scallions pairs well with sake or highballs.

This plate is jidori (local chicken) tataki, not fish sashimi. Very fresh and satisfyingly plump, with shiso, daikon, wasabi, or citrus-kosho for variety.

The sashimi boat offers amaebi (sweet shrimp), white fish, tuna, and more—ideal for families or groups to share.

The grilled fish is hakkaku—a fish you don’t see on every izakaya menu. Crispy skin, with daikon oroshi, lemon, and mayo with chili on the side.

  • Many family tables, but counter seats suit a quiet solo visit like the author’s.
  • Contrast between the wild exterior sign and the warm wooden counter/tables adds to the charm.

Raw or steamed oysters, plump jidori tataki, sashimi boat, and grilled hakkaku hit a nice balance.
